BIO
Sara García Alonso, based in Spain, is a forestry engineer who has worked mostly in the Mediterranean area. Her experience has led her to realize the key importance of restoring the soil and the water cycle to be able to settle healthy and productive ecosystems.
Sara García Alonso specializes in Mediterranean ecosystems and ecological design, incorporating nature-based solutions and bioengineering erosion control systems in which she integrates the advantages of ecosystemic services (e.g. biodiversity, erosion control, soil formation and/or biological plague control).
She believes that ecological restoration on a large scale can be done by creating local ecologically stable and socio-economically productive landscapes.
SCOPE
Many areas of the Mediterranean have been highly degraded in the past decades, leading to the loss of the soil carrying capacity. In addition to that, the challenges of climate change make it necessary to do all we can in order to restore the land´s life support systems.
Therefore, ecological restoration is the transversal axis on which her work is based. To do so, she integrates water and nutrient capture and infiltration systems, prioritizes native vegetation and the creation of habitats for wildlife as well as strategies to increase the quantity and diversity of the soil food web.
She seeks to give continuity to the landscape, nestling the farms within the environment, imitating natural forest systems and enhancing landscape connectivity.
